EFFECT OF SEMI-CONFINEMENT ON IMPINGEMENT HEAT TRANSFER
Abstract
The influence of semi-confinement, provided
by a 348 mm diameter plate parallel to the
impingement surface, on heat transfer was studied
for several Reynolds numbers and jet-to-pl ate
spacings in the range 2 to 16 nozzle diameters.
With nozzles of diameter 10 and 20 mm, the limit
of the confining plate extended radially to 17.4
and 8.7 jet hole diameters, respectively. The
results show that semi-confinement can cause significant
reductions in impingement heat transfer
coefficient, with the largest effect occurring at
small jet-to-plate spacings. Reducing the jet
hole diameter by one-half and doubling the
relative limit of confinement appear to have no
significant effect on the magnitudes of the
decrease in average heat transfer coefficient.
