EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF RADIATIVE INTERCHANGE FACTORS: ANALYTICAL BASIS AND EXPLORATORY MEASUREMENTS
Abstract
A laboratory bench-top technique is described for measuring the total radiative interchange kernel which appears in Hottel's script-F. Remote excitation with an IR beam is used to simulate diffuse emission on a surface of a scale model which is both geometrically and reflectively similar to an enclosure. A remote viewing radiometer measures the excitation and the response at a second surface. The ratio of fluxes is the interchange kernel. These measurements may be used in thermal analyzer programs without additional measurements of bidirectional reflectances or computation of geometrical shape factors.
