PROBE CONSTANT FOR IN-SITU DETERMINATION OF THERMAL CONDUCTIVITIES OF SOILS
Abstract
In using a heated probe of finite diameter for the in-situ determination of thermal conductivities of soils, the theory of line heat source can not be directly applied. Consequently, the energy equation must be modified. The probe actually replaces a small core of the specimen. A method has been found to compensate for the difference in heat dissipation between the instrument and the displaced core. Each probe is given a constant for a specific range of thermal conductivity and moisture content. By inserting the constant in the equation for the line heat source, accurate results have been obtained.
