Optimal design of two-dimensional rectangular annular fins with variable heat transfer coefficients
Abstract
This investigation is to apply a two-dimensional analysis to determine the optimal dimensions of the
annular rectangular fins with variable heat transfer coefficients and non-insulated tip. A general form of heat
transfer coefficient is employed and an integral method is utilized. The golden section search method is then
employed to determine the optimal fin dimensions. The effects of different parameters on the optimal fin designs
are examined. Typical numerical results for optimal fin dimensions and heat transfer are presented. Based on
these numerical results, seven sets of working formulae for optimal fin design are proposed to facilitate the
thermal designers.
