THE THERMAL EFFECT IN NANO OSMOSIS
Аннотация
In the past decades, various nanoporous materials have attracted extensive interest due to their potential as
membranes with high permeability and salt rejection. In this separation process, osmosis is a ubiquitous mass transfer process across the membrane and is directly related to the change of solute concentration. Considering the thermal effect during the dilution or concentration process, the thermal effect in osmosis seems to be reasonable, especially for the ultra-permeable membrane. In this work, we analyze the osmosis through a membrane consisting of carbon nanotubes in the isothermal condition and the possible thermal effect. The
coupled heat and mass transfer across the membrane is described by the thermo-osmosis theory. The spontaneous temperature difference is negligible and may not be measurable in the experiment. Meanwhile, the influence of the bulk temperature on the flux is discussed. The increase of the solution temperature in the feed side or draw side can decrease the viscosity of the solution and promote the transmembrane flux. It is found that for an ultrathin membrane made of carbon nanotube described by the molecular dynamics simulation studies, increasing the temperature of the draw solution cannot overcome the osmotic flux due to the negligible temperature difference across the membrane. This work may help to explore the applications of the
nanoporous membrane in desalination and separation processes.
