THE ONSET OF CONVECTION IN A MUSHY LAYER DURING TIME-DEPENDENT SOLIDIFICATION
Аннотация
Convective instability in a mushy layer during solidification of a binary melt is analyzed by using the propagation theory we have developed. Emms & Fowler's (1994) model is used in deriving the stability equations in the time-dependent solidification system. In the present analysis the stability equations are transformed similarly by using the developing mushy-layer thickness as the length scaling factor. Based on the propagation theory, the onset conditions to mark convective motion in the mushy layer are obtained numerically. The present predictions are compared well with the existing experimental data of aqueous ammonium chloride solution and for large superheat they agree well with the results from Emms & Fowler's quasi-static analysis.
