OSCILLATORY HEAT TRANSFER IN EXTENDED SURFACES
Resumo
This paper revisits the problem of transient heat transfer in which an isolated, straight rectangular fin with an adiabatic tip is subjected to a periodic temperature variation at its base. A solution is obtained for the temperature distribution within the fin, using a one-dimensional approximation, from which the heat flow characteristics are determined. As an indication of fin performance, the fin efficiency and average fin efficiency are calculated. Also in the present paper a two-dimensional solution to the same problem is determined analytically. The effects of varying the fin dimensions and amplitude and frequency of oscillation are investigated. A comparison of the results produced from both solutions then establishes the criteria for which the one-dimensional approximation becomes valid.
