Resumo

A test section was designed and built, housing a square array of 4 electrically heated rods. Detailed velocity and temperature profiles were measured along the centerline of the subchannels at two axial planes, utilizing the Hydrogen Bubble Technique and movable thermocouples respectively. These tests were run with uniform lateral power distribution in the mixed convection flow regime. The experimental data were compared with computational results from (a) a numerical solution for developing flow conditions (3D) in interconnected subchannels and (b) an analytic solution for fully developed flow (2D) in isolated subchannels. The 3D numerical results satisfactorily predicted the data. The 2D analytic results deviated from the data, particularly for high flow rate and low L/Dh cases. A set of data was also obtained to characterize the onset of thermal plumes.
