Resumo

The conditions marking the onset of natural convection due to buoyant forces are investigated in the thermal entrance region of horizontal plane Couette flow. Of particular interest is the fluid layer bounded between free-rigid boundaries and heated from belov with the constant heat flux. The stability analysis is conducted under the Choi's postulate that for large Prandtl numbers the spatial propagation of temperature disturbances at the axial position of onset of longitudinal vortex rolls is confined within the local thermal boundary layer. For this modified local stability analysis a new mathematical method based on the rapidly converging power series is introduced. In comparison with experiments, it is found that the present analysis predicts the most reasonable stability criteria. Also, it is shown that the effect of shear conditions of the upper boundary on stability conditions becomes negligible as the heat flux increases.
