The effects of anisotropy in thermal conductivity and of a range of solid/liquid conductivity ratios on convection and flow in a stationary inverted Bridgman apparatus have been investigated, with the growth of crystals of gallium in mind. A variety of steady and unsteady flow patterns, both symmetric and asymmetric, was observed. Transition Rayleigh numbers have been identified.
