This paper deals with the stability of one-dimensional conduction problems with change of phase. The following cases are considered: (a) a sharp interface exists between the two phases w1th conduction alone, (b) a two-phase zone occurs between the phases with heat transfer due to conduction and concentration gradients, and (c) a sharp interface exists between the two phases but with conduction as well as lateral convect1ve heat transfer. Linear stability analyses are made for each of these cases arriving at the characteristic stability equations, approximate solutions to which are presented.
