NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF HEAT TRANSFER IN HIGH TEMPERATURE HIGH HEAT FLUX HYDROGEN COOLED SYSTEMS
Résumé
Under high temperature and high heat flux conditions of a
nuclear rocket core, partial dissociation of hydrogen introduces an unprecedented challenge to engineering correlations which are used to predict wall heat transfer rates. This paper presents the results of a detailed computational analysis of flow and heat transfer in a high temperature, high heat flux circular tube cooled or heated by the turbulent flow of hydrogen gas. A large number of empirical correlations of the Nusselt number with correction terms for near wall, real gas properties and entrance
regions are considered and evaluated. A comparative analysis
is conducted to identify the Nusselt number correlation that
best fits the physical conditions of a hydrogen cooled nuclear rocket engine.
