UNSTEADY HEAT TRANSFER FROM A CYLINDER IN CROSS FLOW; A DIRECT NUMERICAL SIMULATION
Résumé
A direct numerical simulation of the flow past a cylinder is carried out using the spectral element method, a technique particularly appropriate for simulation of unsteady flows at moderate Reynolds number. Details of the vortex shedding process are reported, and local and average heat transfer rates are predicted. Attention is focused on the effect of flow modulation on the heat transfer, and results are presented for various amplitudes and driving frequencies. It is shown that the local heat transfer distribution around the cylinder is strongly affected by the oscillation, but there are no significant increases of the average heat transfer rate. Comparison with experimental data, when possible, gives excellent agreement.
