EFFECTS OF TURBULENT WAKE FLOW FORMED BEHIND A SQUARE CYLINDER ON MASS DIFFUSION PROCESS IN A TURBULENT BOUNDARY LAYER
Sinopsis
We experimentally investigate the effect of a velocity field formed around a square cylinder on the transport phenomena of a substance continuously released in a turbulent boundary layer developing on a flat plate. The characteristics of concentration and velocity fields are measured with a fast-response flame ionization detector and particle image velocimetry. We have elucidated the fluid-dynamical relationship between turbulent diffusion of ethylene and the flow field formed behind the square cylinder by changing the rotation angle around the cylinder axis to the free-stream. As a result, the mean velocity field formed behind the cylinder has strongly affected the mean concentration distribution in the flow cross sections normal to the streamwise direction. It
is found that the behavior of the rms intensity of the concentration fluctuations can be well characterized by
the streamwise turbulence intensity behind the square cylinder.
