FEM/BEM calculation of the temperature and velocity fields in a visco-elastic fluid between two rotating rolls
Sinopsis
The temperature, velocity, stress and pressure fields in the gap between two rolls rotating in opposite directions are calculated and compared with a measured stress field. Theoretical results are presented for steady, non-isothermal, and Non-Newtonian calculations. The equations of motion and continuity are solved with a Finite Element Method (FEM) basing on the Galerkin weighted residual method. This computer code is combined with a Boundary Element Method (BEM) algorithm using the Dual Reciprocity Method (DRM) to solve the equation of energy. The equation of energy is coupled to the other differential equations by the temperature superposition shift factor. Time dependent calculations can be carried .out by implicit finite difference schemes for the time step. In the velocity field the flow changes from drag flow to pressure flow. Dissipation occurs and results in local heating up of the fluid. This may lead to a degradation of the calendered polymers and to a damage of the products. The amount of the heating up depends very much on the rheological behaviour of the fluid.
