PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDY OF BOILING ON PREPARED SURFACES
Sinopsis
The results of experiments described in Section I on the influence of surface roughness and reduced
pressure on nucleate pool boiling show that bubble departure size and frequency are strongly influenced by
the nucleating cavity size. A row of cavities was therefore produced along a stainless steel rod and the
diameters were measured. Sections II and III describe theoretical predictions and measurements using 0
cine photography of the bubble departure sizes and frequencies with nucleate boiling at different pressures
from these artificial cavities. The theoretical models which are proposed include the cavity size as an
important variable and give good agreement with the experimental values of the boiling parameters.
