Mass discharge through branches in horizontal two-phase flows
Sinopsis
The present paper deals with the problem of the prediction of the mass discharge through an offtake, as a small
break or a branch, located at the top or at the bottom of a large diameter horizontal pipe or vessel interested by
two-phase flow. Due to the importance of such subject in various technical fields, many authors have carried out
extensive experimental and theoretical studies in order to investigate the phase redistribution between the main
pipe and the branch, and have proposed correlations for the evaluation of the branch exit mass and quality.
In this paper we present a new formulation of this problem which produces a simple expression, Equation (1) in the text, that can be easily transformed to give the branch quality. Such an expression, when applied to representative experimental data published in literature, proves quite accurate.
