APPLICATION OF ENGINEERING HEAT TRANSPORT CONCEPTS TO THE ANALYSIS OF BIOLOGICAL THERMOREGULATORY SYSTEMS
Sinopsis
A methodology for the application of engineering techniques to the quantitative elucidation of biological contror mechanisms is outlined. Using thermoregulation as an example, the mutual beneficial interactions between theoretical developments and concurrent studies on human subjects is demonstrated. Whereas engineering analogies of biological control systems serve useful correlative and communicative functions, they are at best only pale reflections of the fascinatingly efficient and complex control mechanisms which result in "la fixité du milieu intérieur" of living systems.
