ENHANCEMENT OF COOLING PERFORMANCE FOR A HEAT PIPEBASED BATTERY THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WITH FLOW BOILING
Abstract
Thermal management is crucial for improving the charge–discharge efficiency and cycling life of lithium ion
battery. A heat pipe-based thermal management system based on flow boiling in cooling channel was proposed for battery pack. A comparative experiment was carried out to investigate the thermal performance of flow boiling and single phase convection. The effect of coolant flow rate on the performance of boiling heat transfer was experimentally investigated. The results confirm that the proposed heat pipe-based thermal management system can effectively control the temperature of battery pack. To achieve similar thermal performance, the
coolant flow rate of flow boiling is at least 50% lower than that of convection. The uniformity of temperature is
enhanced by using flow boiling. The thermal performance of flow boiling is firstly improved and then reduced with the increase of coolant flow rate. For different heat generation rates, there existed a range of coolant flow rate during which the dominant mechanism is boiling heat transfer. The pressure of inlet and outlet fluctuates with the heat generation rates under cycle conditions.
