ASPECTS OF GALERKIN APPROXIMATIONS FOR HYDRODYNAMIC SIMULATIONS
Abstract
Several related topics will be discussed: 1)the upper bound on the adequate number of modes for a qualitatively correct Galerkin approximation to the two dimensional Benard convection; 2)selection rules for the Galerkin modes insuring that the approximation satisfies the same energy balance equations as the exact solution; 3)a practical algorithm for testing the validity of numerical simulations using the Galerkin method; 4)the role of the Nusselt number in determining the adequate number of modes needed for simulating a given flow.
