Аннотация

The fragmentation of small drops of Woods’ metal and of mercury in water behind a pressure shock wave, generally at low Weber numbers, was studied experimentally. The drops flattened and expanded as a result of their acceleration and internal mixing with the surrounding water. Neither Taylor instability nor boundary-layer stripping were observed. It is suggested that the mixing may result from vorticity at the trailing edge of the drops. A simple entrainment model is proposed.
