Simultaneous measurements of the time-averaged solids motion and the local heat transfer coefficient with in-line and staggered tube banks in a large particle fluidized bed are presented. Experiments were conducted in a 0.292 m diameter gas-fluidized bed for a range of superficial velocities. Two particle sizes, with nominal diameters of 1.0 mm and 1.7 mm were used. A Computer Automated Radioactive Particle Tracking Facility was used to determine the long time-averaged solids velocity and density. The averaged solids motion for the in-line and staggered tube banks was similar but the solids velocities for the latter were found to be lower. The local heat transfer coefficients were shown to be dependent on the location in the bed and azimuthal direction. They showed a peak at the bottom half of the tubes. They also showed an increase with an increase in the superficial velocity except in the center of the bed for the staggered tube bank. Comparison of the overall heat transfer coefficient with the models of Ganzha, et al. (1982) and Decker and Glicksman (1983) showed poor agreement. No consistent correlation between the overall heat transfer coefficient and the solids mean mass velocity was observed.
