The paper describes recent developments in the application of electrical assistance to heat transfer at both the inner and outer tube surfaces in shell/tube heat exchangers. The origins of the electrophoretic and dielectrophoretic forces that affect heat transfer are explained. Quantitative results are presented:
1) Within tubes: single-phase heat transfer to transformer oil, avaiation kerosine ('Avtur') and hexane, using injected charge.
2) Outside tubes: a) Single-phase heat transfer to transformer oil, without charge injection b) Two-phase heat transfer, boiling (in the "hysteresis" regime) and condensation of Freons R12 and R114.
Arrangements for applying the electric field within and around the tubes are described. Attention is drawn to the potential for cost reduction in heat exchangers generally and particularly those in OTEC and geothermal energy systems.
