Аннотация

The analysis of the process dynamics in tubular polymerizers, largely determined by heat and mass transfer, is very important for the understanding, design and stable operation of such reactors. A computer simulation model has been developed to investigate the effects of coupled, nonlinear transport and conversion phenomena including system parameter variations on reactor stability and optimal performance. Specifically, the local interactions between strong temperature gradients, rapid polymerization, temperature/ conversion-dependent transport properties, and elongated velocity profiles have been analyzed for different reactor inlet and wall conditions. For the process dynamics of styrene polymerization it was found, that for tube radii above 2 cm and moderate flow rates, thermal runaway, flow channeling and steep radial gradients in all principal variables may occur.
