Аннотация

The objective of the present study was to make clear the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the phenomena occurring in one of the crystal growth methods called horizontal boat method. Buoyancy and surface tension driven natural convection in a horizontal rectangular liquid layer was investigated. One of the vertical walls of the container was heated and the opposite wall was cooled below the freezing point of the liquid. Solidification of the melt started from the cooled wall.
Experimental observations and numerical analyses, for both one- and two-dimensional models, were carried out. It was found out that the one-dimensional model assuming that the solid-liquid interface was kept flat and vertical throughout the growth process failed after solidification proceeded to some extent. The two-dimensional analysis taking into consideration the effect of coupled natural convection was proved to be effective to obtain with sufficient accuracy the rate of growth and the profile of solidified layer.
