Experimental data on heat transfer degradation when water, steam-water mixture or superheated steam is flowed through curved portions of pipes of different diameters and curviture radii are presented. The pressure variation is within the range of 20 to 295 bars and the enthalpy varies from 210 to 3350 Kjoule/kg.
Within a certain region of enthalpies at subcritical parameters, critical heat fluxes in bands are found to be smaller than in straight pipes, whereas at higher enthalpies the reverse is true. In all cases the boiling crisis develops near inside part of the bend.
When flowing non-boiling water or superheated steam through bends, local heat transfer coefficients near the inside part of the bend are found to be considerably lower than those near the outer part of the bend and lower than those in straight pipes.
