SPACE RADIATION DAMAGE TO THE THERMAL RADIATIVE PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS

In situ studies of the optical damage to sintered ZnO exposed to a simulated solar ultraviolet environment in vacuum indicates that the damage is highly reversible, recovering almost completely upon exposure to atmospheric conditions. A working model of the ultraviolet induced damage has been established. Exploratory ground-based investigations of the effects of combined high-energy electron (800 keV)-plus-ultraviolet radiation have indicated that synergistic effects of engineering importance are produced when samples are exposed to the combined environments. Experimental studies also indicate that damage of importance will occur after exposure ranging from just over forty days in space in the natural, geomagnetically-trapped low-energy proton environment (E ~ 100 keV).
