Two-dimensional turbulent heat transfer on repeated blocks in a rectangular air channel was investigated numerically. The blocks were positioned with a uniform pitch and a height to length ratio of 0.33. The air channel height is 4 times the block height, which is identical to that of Saniei et al. (1994) where heat transfer was measured. The Reynolds number, which is based on the block length, varies from 8,000 to 29,000. Grid independent solutions were obtained by using the finite volume method to solve the steady state, incompressible RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations. The standard k-ε model and the RNG k-ε model, with standard wall functions were used. A two-layer zonal model was also employed in the valleys between the blocks.
Local and average Nusselt numbers were computed with both separated and simultaneous heating thermal boundary conditions. Simulated local heat transfer coefficients were compared with the experimental results. The results from RNG k-ε turbulence model showed a better match with experimental data than the standard k-ε model. Periodically fully-developed pattern of average heat transfer was observed for the Reynolds number range tested.
