Three-dimensional separated flow adjacent to backward-facing step

Laser-Doppler measurements and simulations of three-dimensional laminar airflow adjacent to backwardfacing step are reported for a duct with an aspect ratio (AR) of 8, an expansion ratio (ER) of 2.02, and a step height (S) of 0.01m. The flow upstream of the step is laminar, isothermal, and fully developed. The "jet-like" flow that develops in the separating shear layer near the sidewall impinges on the stepped wall, causing a minimum to develop in the spanwise distribution of the reattachment length near the sidewall at the impingement region. Reverse flow regions develop adjacent to sidewalls and the flat wall in this geometry. The size of the primary recirculating flow region and other reverse flow regions increase with increasing Reynolds number, and measurements compare very favorably with simulations. Simulations of the thermal field and the Nusselt number are presents.
