Thermoelectric Generator Utilizing Automobile Engine Exhaust Gas (Numerical Simulation and Optimum Fin Arrangement)

A thermoelectric generator utilizing exhaust gas of an automobile engine was developed. A simple numerical
method to simulate the heat transfer system including the thermoelectric modules was proposed to estimate the
performance of the generator. This numerical method gives reasonable results of the electric output power and
energy balance compared with experimental results, and shows its usefulness for designing a thermoelectric
generator system. Further, the fin arrangement of the heat exchanger for the exhaust gas was optimized to
maximize the effective output power which is the electrical power subtracted by mechanical power expended to
overcome fluid friction.
