The regenerative evaporative cooler comprised of dry and wet channels is to cool a stream of air to a temperature lower than the inlet wet-bulb temperature by redirecting a portion of the air flown out of the dry channel into the wet channel and spraying water on it. To improve the cooling performance of the regenerative evaporative cooler, it is crucial to enhance the heat transfer between the channels as well as the water evaporation in the wet channel. In this respect, it is devised to insert metal fins in both the dry and wet channels. A nalyzing the heat and mass transfer in the regenerative evaporative cooler, optimization of the fin configuration is carried out. With the optimal design result, a regenerative evaporative cooler is constructed and tested for performance evaluation. When the intake air is 32°C and 40% in relative humidity, and the redirection air fraction is 30%, the cooling efficiency is measured 74% which is 12% lower than the design value.T he main reason for the discrepancy is assessed as the insufficient wetting of the fin surface in the wet channel.
