A simulation model was developed for finned coil evaporators, that are commonly used for air conditioning and refrigeration applications. It is well known that the flow configuration does not conform to the elementary parallel or counter flow patterns. Besides, the simulation model must account for the variability of the heat transfer coefficient, as a function of vapour quality and temperature difference between internal fluid and tube wall, and for the combined heat and mass transfer between humid air and cold surface.
To meet this needs, the peculiar and original characteristic of the proposed model is the subdivision of the heat transfer area into several elements that perfectly conform to the true flow pattern of the two streams.
Examples, relative to air-conditioning and refrigeration applications, are finalised to highlight the suitability of the model in order to find the optimal design of the internal circuits of the heat exchanger: different choices are critically discussed with reference to the heat transfer performance.
