The problem numerically investigated is that of steady, two-dimensional laminar natural convection between two vertical rectangular plates with a protruding heated module mounted mid-height on a substrate of finite thickness. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the effects of variations of the thermal conductivity and thickness of the substrate, and the width of the module. It is shown that it is relevant to couple heat conduction within the substrate and natural convection inside the channel. The use of isothermal or isoflux boundary condition at the channel surface (i.e., neglecting the substrate thickness) was indeed shown to be inadequate. A variation in the substrate conductivity affects not only the maximum module temperature but also alters considerably the flow behavior.
