Post-dryout heat transfer mechanisms can be subdivided according to the fluiddynamic phenomena into three regions, namely dispersed flow heat transfer, film-boiling and transition boiling. A review of the literature - mainly of the last four years - shows that in the dispersed flow regime a reliable prediction of the heat transfer coefficient is possible due to a great number of experimental results and several physically based theoretical models.

Correlations for film boiling usually contain strongly simplified assumptions concerning the fluid dynamic behaviour in the vapor film and the interaction between the vapor and the liquid at the interphase. Systematic measurements are especially needed for film boiling in subcooled liquids. Furthermore the phenomena of transition boiling should be researched in more detail.
