EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF MELTING IN A RECTANGULAR CAVITY
Аннотация
Heat transfer and solid-liquid interface motion has been investigated in laboratory melting experiments using n-octadecane as the phase change material, which was subjected to a uniform temperature at the vertical sides and the bottom of a two-dimensional, rectangular cavity. The experimental results provide further evidence of the important role played by the natural convection in the melt on the shape and the motion of the solid-liquid interface, the local heat transfer coefficients along the heated cavity walls, and the enhancement of the rate of melting for a low thermal conductivity material such as n-octadecane. An empirical correlation for melted volume as a function of dimensionless time, Stefan number and aspect ratio as well as the instantaneous, heated surface-averaged Nusselt vs. Rayleigh number relation have been obtained.
