The authors and their group at Indian Institute of Technology Madras have been concentrating on the area of “interaction of radiation with other modes of heat transfer” for the past two decades. Both experimental and numerical studies have been made. Most of the numerical studies have been made using codes developed in house. However lately commercial codes that have stood the test of time also have been used, especially while dealing with optimization problems that are computer intensive. This area is of current relevance as evidenced by a large number of papers that appear in the archival literature. The experimental investigations have considered geometries that are generally of relevance to applications such as cooling of electronic equipment. The studies include the interaction of surface radiation with a) natural convection b) forced convection, c) mixed convection as well as d) wall conduction. Surface emissivities and the temperature levels are used to provide a measure of variation for the wall radiation. Mainly laminar flow cases are considered. In the case of “cavities”, the role of openings in the walls is of major concern, and is explored. Numerical modeling has been done in cases that correspond to the geometries that have been considered in the experimental studies. The experimental results provide validation of the numerical results. Such validation enhances our confidence in the codes that are subsequently used for large scale numerical studies from the view point of generating numerical correlations useful for design. Semi-experimental methods have also been developed to bridge the gap between experiments and numerical studies.
