Resumo

This paper is concerned with the development of a mechanistic approach to model the interfacial dynamics in two-phase flows in general, and in boiling channels in particular. The proposed modelling concept uses transport equations for quantities such as: multigroup bubble concentrations and interfacial area densities, combined with the models of bubble coalescence and breakup. Test calculations were performed for up to ten groups of bubbles of different sizes. The overall model was validated against experimental data for a bubble column. Also, a parametric study was performed to investigate the effect of bubble/bubble interactions on void fraction evolution during forced-convection boiling in heated channels. It has been found that the total void fraction for a sufficiently large number of bubble groups is typically lower than that for a single-group (two-fluid) model, and the relative difference may be of the order of 10%.
