Resumo

Turbulence for confined natural convection is modelled by a k−ε formulation, which takes into account the participation of buoyancy in the generation/dissipation of turbulence. Results are presented for a two-dimensional square cavity with Prandtl number (Pr) of 0.71 and Rayleigh number (Ra) ranging from 107 up to 1010. The numerical predictions are compared with existing data from other numerical and experimental results. Also, results are presented for a 10:1 height-to-width aspect ratio two-dimensional rectangular cavity filled with water, and Rayleigh number, based on the height of isothermal walls, of 8×1010. The numerical predictions are critically examined by comparing them with accurate experimental measurements.
The good agreement between the numerical results and the experimental findings, indicates that the model is capable of predicting well the complex flow pattern and temperature distribution, which arise at high Rayleigh number.
