Resumo

Hydrodynamic equilibrium gas-liquid two-phase flows are defined and the attainment of equilibrium is discussed in the context of various types of two-phase flow (namely annular flow, bubble flow, plug flow and slug flow). The possibility of multiple equilibrium states is then discussed and illustrated with the case of counter-current falling film flow co-existing with churn flow following the "flooding" transition. Departures from hydrodynamic equilibrium are then discussed, including those caused by entrance effects, by mechanical effects, by thermal effects (both global and local) and by transient effects. The importance of departures from equilibrium in calculating system parameters in two-phase flows is stressed throughout.
