Resumo

A method for the design of compact heat exchangers for flow boiling is the use of the local assumption, namely the local heat transfer coefficient is fixed by the local ΔT and local fluid velocity. The background consists of the method applied to single fins and small assemblies. Early studies of fin spacing established that a clearance of one bubble diameter is sufficient for vapor escape. The necessity of a stepwise procedure along the flow path is shown. Data for one existing exchanger evaluated by the technique and two new exchangers designed by the technique are shown. The measured upper performance on a volumetric basis was 120,000 kW/m3, which exceeds any published duty for the exchange of heat between two fluids separated by a metal wall.
