Resumo

The RELAP5/M0D2 computer program developed by EG&G, Idaho (USA) is the latest of the RELAP programs that are used to calculate the thermal-hydraulic response of water reactors to transient conditions. A model was developed for RELAP5/M0D2 to simulate surface condensation in the presence of noncondensible gases by the Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) in cooperation with the B&W Owners Group. Accurate modeling of this process is needed to predict on a best-estimate rather than conservative basis, the course of certain reactor transients. The model developed by B&W is based upon the method developed by Colburn and Hougen. When the vapor flow is turbulent, the mass transfer is calculated using the Gilliland correlation. When the vapor flow is laminar, the analogy between heat and mass transfer is employed along with the Rohsenow-Choi heat transfer correlation for laminar flow. The model was verified by simulating pressurizer in-surge tests conducted by MIT and single tube condensation tests conducted by B&W.
