Resumo

The traditional design method for plate heat exchangers, either ε − NTU or LMTD method, involves many trials because they take the allowable pressure drops as constraints. This can be avoided by use of an improved design method suggested in the authors' previous publication, which takes the full utilization of allowable pressure drops as design objective. In this paper, the improved method is further developed, and complete optimal design is undertaken for plate heat exchangers in single-phase applications. Pressure drops are no longer arbitrarily set ahead of design, instead, they are economically optimized during the design. By doing so, true optimal exchanger design becomes simple and straightforward. In addition, the optimal corrugation angle is discussed for the most common chevron-type plate heat exchangers.
