Resumo

This paper presents an experimental study of a symmetrical windowless target mock-up of the spallation target of an Accelerator Driven System (ADS). The target configuration is made by two concentric cylinders (inner/ outer cylinder diameters 200/290 mm). Water has been used as hydraulic equivalent to lead-bismuth eutectic fluid. The experiments have been carried out at room temperature and flow rate ranging from 5 to 15 kg/s. The fluid velocity components have been measured by a pulsed echo ultrasound technique. The velocity field of the liquid that flows downward the inner cylinder can be considered approximately axial-symmetrical and the vertical and radial components at different vertical and radial position as a function of the initial level and of the flow rate are presented. A preliminary comparison of experimental data with the prediction of the finite volume FLUENT code is also presented.
