Resumo

The results of numerical solutions of the equations of motion, energy, and species continuity for laminar flow heat transfer in a vertical isothermal wall tubular reactor in which a homogeneous, irreversible reaction is occurring, are presented. Owing to free convection, temperature-dependent viscosity, and entrance-region flow, predicted Nusselt numbers in upward flow may be up to 25% larger or smaller depending on the case than when these factors are not considered. In downward flow, however, the effects of these factors are comparatively small. The presence of a chemical reaction may more than double the Nusselt numbers depending on the conditions.
