Resumo

Natural convection is observed on an isothermal sphere and horizontal cylinder in water whose temperature varies approximately linearly in the vertical direction. Visual studies of the flow field, and heat transfer data, are given. The nature of the thermal plume is observed as the steepness of the thermal gradient, relative to the size and temperature of the body, is varied. The plumes slightly overshoot a limiting thermal level, then return to it and move sharply horizontally. Heat transfer data and plume dimensions are correlated with the thermal gradient.
