PREDICTION OF BUOYANT TURBULENT JETS AND PLUMES IN A CROSS FLOW

Resumo

A differential approach for the analysis of the behavior of turbulent, axisymmetric buoyant jets and plumes discharged into a flowing ambient is presented where the thin shear layer form of the governing partial differential equations for the conservation of mass, momentum and energy, derived in a curvilinear, orthogonal coordinate system is solved numerically by an implicit finite-difference technique. A "lumped" analysis is proposed to simplify the momentum equation in the transverse direction. The turbulent shear stress and heat flux terms appearing in the governing equations are evaluated through turbulent viscosity and conductivity models which contain parameters related to buoyancy and streamline curvature. Several comparisons with experimental data are presented for jets discharged at various angles to a cross flow.
