THE TURBULENT DIFFUSION OF HEAT IN RECIRCULATING LIQUID METAL AND WATER FLOWS
Resumo
The paper reports measurements of the turbulent Prandtl number in sodium and water flows. The test-section was an axisymmetric, sudden pipe expansion where hot fluid was introduced by a coaxial injector upstream of the expansion. In the water experiment the steady temperature distribution was measured with a thermocouple rake and
the steady velocity distribution with a laser doppler anemometer. Only the temperature distribution was measured in the analogous sodium experiment. The results of the experiments were analysed by a finite-element code to give the turbulent diffusion of heat and momentum. As
expected, the results indicate a marked variation
of the turbulent Prandtl number with Reynolds number for sodium. This contrasts with the behaviour for water. At higher Reynolds numbers, the results for sodium are asymptotic to those for water.
