Resumo

A series of critical heat flux tests on a horizontal 6-m long, 37-element bundle simulating a CANDU fuel string, was performed at Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories in a high pressure steam and water loop. Concurrently, similar tests on a replica of the water test string were done in a Freon-12 loop. The CHF results for both water and Freon are presented in this paper. An attempt has also been made to establish a horizontal CHF modelling criterion for long complex geometries. It is concluded that (1) accurate modelling of CHF in horizontal long multi-rod bundles is feasible for the case where full scale geometries are used, and (2) CHF correlation obtained solely from 37-element horizontal Freon experiments are capable of satisfactorily predicting CHF for 37-element water-cooled horizontal channels, but further verifications are required to establish the generality of this technique to other multi-element geometries.
