Resumo

Transient boiling on a fine platinum wire immersed in water has been obtained at heating rates of up to 10 million K/s. With such rapid heating, nucleation occurs preferentially in a homogeneous rather than a heterogeneous manner, and the shape of the wire temperature versus time curve clearly distinguishes the two types.
Measurements have been made at a variety of heating rates and initial water temperature and pressures, the main interest being in the heat transfer rates subsequent to homogeneous nucleation. Heat fluxes in excess of 100 MW/sq.m have been observed.
The motivation for the work is the apparent significance of homogeneous nucleation in the context of the so-called "Leidenfrost temperature", and also as a proposed criterion for the occurence of a thermal explosion following the mixing of a hot liquid and a cooler volatile liquid.
