Resumo

A Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used to obtain measurements of the average temperature and average rate of heat transfer in free convection on a heated, vertical, flat plate with a non isothermal wall in the direction of the light beam. Wall temperatures measured with the interferometer are compared with the average of those obtained with thermocouples. Measurements of the average wall heat-transfer rate and boundary-layer temperatures are compared with averages based on a quasi-two-dimensional laminar theory. An analysis of the interferometer equations for nonisothermal conditions is presented.
